Self Defense-Canine Confrontations

February 10th, 2007

That was the article title in the Santa Fe New Mexican Friday morning February 9, 2006: “Canine Confrontations”The story by Natalie Storey-no I am not making that up-goes like this in part. “When Kate Jewel takes her blue healer, Niki, for walks, they no longer go alone. Jewel, a trim 58 year old, carries pepper spray, a device that emits a high frequency sound to deter animals and a miniature stun gun.“All of this to fight off dogs. After she and Niki were attacked by three other dogs on Nov 14on the Borrego Trail, Jewel has become terrified of other people’s dogs.“I love dogs. I can understand the joy of dogs wanting to run free. But people let their dogs run loose and they don’t understand the consequences of their actions”

Well said Kate. The device she was referring to is the “Dog Chaser” which uses ultrasonic technology causing a high pitched sound audible to dogs only. This can be used up to 15 feet away. The pepper spray she referred is an EPA approved spray by Mace brand that cannot harm the dog.
Both can be used by delivery people, walkers, joggers, cyclists to prevent dogs from attacking in a humane way.
Every year 4.7 million people are bitten by dogs from a minor nip to a major attack according to the US Animal Humane Society.  Countless others are victims of the terror experienced from a chasing dog. Now there is a way to stop dog attacks without injury to the dogs or you.
Chances are very good that you are reading this because in some way dog attacks have touched your life or you want to be proactive and protect yourself and family from the ravages and fear of dog attacks. That is the first step.

NOW the next step is for you to take action TODAY and purchase some protection from dog attacks at www.aaa-safetyfirst.com/dogrepellent.htm or www.aaa-safetyfirst.com/dogchaser.htm

Home Security-Home Invasion-Five Seconds Can Change Your Life!

February 5th, 2007

You see and hear about it every day-home invasions. They are on the rise. A home invasion is when robbers force their way into an occupied home to commit a robbery or other crimes.  It is frightening because it violates our private space-our sanctuary.Five Seconds that all it takes to get in.

Most police agencies and the FBI will statistically record the crime as a residential burglary or a robbery. Without the ability to track the specific crime of home invasion, little can be done to alert the public as to the frequency of occurrence in their community or devise a law enforcement plan of action to control it.

Residential burglars work mostly during the day and when a residence is more likely to be unoccupied.

·         They tend to work alone

·         They avoid confrontation and violence

·         They are deterred by minimal precautionary measures-alarm signs etc.

Home invasion robbers, in contrast, work more often at night and on weekends when homes are more likely to be occupied.

·         They rarely work alone

·         They target occupants as well as the home based on perceived “wealth”

·         They use confrontation, violence and domination as part of their procedure

·         They may have been in the home before as a delivery man etc.

The most common entry point for a home invader is the front door. If the occupants are home it is a safe bet for the invaders that the alarm or camera will be off. So they use force or subterfuge to get in without any fear of outside discovery. Sadly many people simply open the door in answer to a knock or a bell making entry very easy. FIVE SECONDS is all it takes to get in.

Once inside the house it will be nice and quiet unlike a retail store. The invaders can force their will, be it simply robbing the house or more often rape, assault, kidnapping even murder.

Many of the same ideas used to prevent daytime burglaries will go a long way to prevent forced entry home robberies. Time is of the essence. If you can delay them long enough to call police you might save yourself. Solid core doors and strong deadbolt locks with reinforced strike plates, and reinforced window devices will stop most forced entries. FIVE SECONDS IS ALL IT TAKES TO GET IN!

It is also a great idea to have several non lethal self defense weapons located throughout the house-stun guns, pepper sprays, etc. Knowing how to use them and acting quickly could save your family.

Joke of the day-laugh a little-it is good excercise for the face

January 28th, 2007

Two drunks are driving down the highway, drinking their beer. All of a sudden the driver notices lights flashing in his mirror; the cops are on his tail. His buddy says, “What are we going to do?” The driver says, “Don’t worry. Just do exactly what I tell you and everything will work out perfectly. First, peel the labels off our beer bottles and we’ll each stick one on our forehead. Then shove the bottles underneath the seat, and let me do the talking.” They pull over and the cop walks up to the car. He looks at them kind of funny, but asks to see the guy’s driver’s license. And he asks him, “Have you been drinking?” “Oh, no, sir,” the driver replies. “I noticed you weaving back and forth across the highway. Are you *sure* you haven’t been drinking?” the cop asks. “Oh, no, sir,” the drunk answers. “We haven’t had a thing to drink tonight.” “Well, I’ve got to ask you,” says the cop, “What on earth are those things on your forehead?” “That’s easy, Officer,” says the drunk. “You see, we’re both alcoholics, and we’re on the patch.”

Here Little Doggie!

January 26th, 2007
This past week I got an email from a fellow Colorodoan who was concerned about her own safety when walking her dog. It  seems the HOA in her neighborhood has leash laws but of course those only apply to the law abiders.

Several times when out walking her dog they (she and her dog) have been molested by aggressive dogs. For those who have been there they know how terrifying it can be to have a 75 pound dog charging at you. For those of you who haven’t experienced it you should get out more.

The question was how to protect herself and of course the dog. Ordinarily it would have been easy Mace canine repellant www.aaa-safetyfirst.com/dogrepellent.htm. However the plot thickens. The area they live in gets very windy so I advised against the pepper spray idea.

Next thought would have been the dog repeller www.aaa-safetyfirst.com/dogchaser.htm but she has her dog so that wouldn’t work.

How about a stun baton www.aaa-safetyfirst.com/stunbaton.htm?

She checked with her local police department and they actually thought it was a good idea.

I mean what is the difference between a dog attacking you or an assailant doing it?

You have the right to defend yourself.

What do you think?

PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM AN ATTACK

One of the best ways of protecting yourself from attack is to appear confident. Stay out of unfamiliar areas, dress appropriately, avoid walking in unlit areas, and don’t display valuables.  Here are some steps you should take:

1. Take a self-defense class be it a paid one or free one offered by law enforcement. There are lots of self defense training dvd’s available at http://www.aaa-safetyfirst.com

2. Understand self defense equipment and its use. Pepper spray and stun guns are good products if used correctly. Although a set of keys or a telescopic baton may be a better choice. The telescopic baton is small and handheld. It will inflict a lot of pain and put a big hurt on the bad guy. http://www.aaa-safetyfirst.com/telescopic.htm

3. Another good choice is a personal alarm that you carry and can be set off. It produces a loud alarm to scare an attacker and alert others of your trouble. There also are models for you and your child that will alert you when your child gets out of range from you. These are usually adjustable for a 6 to 30 foot area and are specially helpful in store and mall settings. http://www.aaa-safetyfirst.com/alarm.htm

4. Believe it or not the best thing you can do is practice what you will do in an emergency situation. A swift response from a “victim” is the last thing an assailant is expecting “GET SMART AND GET A PLAN.” Plan ahead what you will do in case of an attack at home or away from home.

5.  The fight against crime like any other endeavor requires information and knowledge in order to be successful. These websites offer free information that is updated on a regular basis to keep our readers up to speed.

Albuquerque-The unwelcome sign is out!!

January 17th, 2007

“For the third time in less than two months an Albuquerque homeowner shot and killed an intruder. Preliminary details report that the intruder was attempting to gain access or had gained access to a home occupied by a man and his family.

The homeowner shot the intruder and then called 911 to report the incident. The intruder fled, climbed into his vehicle and then crashed into the homeowners residence where he died. A gun was recovered at the scene and the investigation is continuing.”

If Albuquerque isn’t careful it will start getting a reputation for not welcoming burglars and home invaders-The Castle Doctrine works!!! Where is the rest of the country on this?

Home Security-Cyber Eye Can See in the Dark

January 15th, 2007

Most burglars are experienced professionals whose job is to break into your house and steal whatever they can. Your job-with some outside help- is burglary prevention.

In 2004 the Bureau of Justice reported that

-77% of all crime was property related

-17% of all crime domiciles were violated by a burglar

-85% of all burglaries the offender gained entry into the house or other building.

But the fact is that a determined burglar will get into your home. That is his job and let’s face it, looking at the statistics, they are unfortunately good at it.

Remember this: property crime occurs every 3 seconds, a home burglary every 15 seconds.

Three other tactics might be used to help prevent a burglary are home security alarms or burglar alarms, property marking and home security cameras like the cyber eye.

Home security cameras as part of a home security system are very effective in two respects. First as a deterrent. If a burglar sees that a property is covered with surveillance cameras they will have second thoughts in targeting that property. Second, if they are not that smart and decide to enter anyhow, a good surveillance system will capture the images of the perpetrator making it easier for the police to capture the bad guys. Home security cameras can be wired or wireless, real or dummy, indoor or outdoor, or any combination thereof.

One of the most effective digital surveillance cameras on the market, the Cyber Eye, senses the image of an intruder and automatically records and saves it to memory. It’s easy to install and very small (2-1/4″ High X 3-1/4″ Wide X 3″ Deep). This infrared B/W digital surveillance camera will take pictures automatically whenever someone moves in front of it and then digitally store the pictures within the micro-camera. This allows you to retrieve them later just by plugging the camera into your TV/VCR.

This camera is great for catching someone sneaking around your house or you can put it in your car and aim it out the window. Since it works by changes in the picture and not motion, you can take pictures through glass and it will still work beautifully.

You can set the pictures to be taken at 1-60 second intervals. (UP TO 680 pictures) The unit will automatically add a time and date stamp to each picture. The LED’s allow pictures to be taken in the dark.

With the advances in home security alarms, home security systems including wireless home security and home security cameras maybe, just maybe the bad guys will think twice before breaking into your home

Chances are very good that you are reading this because in some way crime has touched your life or you want to be proactive and protect yourself, family, home, or business from the ravages of crime. That is the first step.

NOW the next step is for you to take action TODAY and purchase a Cyber Eye.

Joke of the day-laugh a little-it is good excercise for the face

January 8th, 2007

There was a man sitting at a bar, and he looks over at the gentleman sitting next to him and says, “Hey, you look familiar.
Are you from around here?” The man answers, “Yeah, I live down the street.”
“No kidding?” says the first man, “Well, so do I. And hey, you look about my age. Where did you go to high school?”
“Oh I went to Francis Lewis over on Utopia. Graduated in ‘66.
How ’bout you?”
“Get out. I went to Francis Lewis. And I graduated in ‘66, too.” “Where’d you go to college?”
“Beloit, in Wisconsin.”
“No way! I went to Beloit too. What dorm?”
“Kevin Sullivan dorm.”
“Sullivan? You’re not going to believe this . . .”
Joe the bartender walks over, and the first guy says, “Joe, you won’t believe it in a million years. This guy went to the same
high school as me, graduated the same year I did, and went to the same college. We were even in the same dorm. Isn’t that amazing?”
Joe looks at them both and says, “Yeah, that’s just plain amazing.”
A third man comes in and says, “Hey Joe. What’s new?” Joe says, “Not much. The Johnson twins are drunk again.”
